A 100% effective treatment against cancer? Why you have to be careful

An experimental cancer drug appears to have cured all patients in a clinical trial in the United States.

An American team claims to have found an effective treatment to cure colorectal cancer. “This is the first time this has happened in the history of cancer”, responded Dr. Luis A. Diaz Jr. of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Results presented as “unprecedented” in the history of oncology. The medical prowess was reported in the columns of the New England Journal of Medicine. Specifically, for nearly six months, the researchers conducted experiments based on dostarlimab, a monoclonal antibody. And according to the New York Timesthis treatment makes it possible to unmask “cancer cells, allowing the immune system to identify and destroy them” : “These drugs don’t work by directly attacking the cancer itself, but instead getting a person’s immune system to do most of the work.”explained one of the researchers.

A result to be confirmed which concerns only a small subgroup of tumors

Result: the 12 patients who participated in this experiment “had a complete clinical response, with no evidence of tumor”. And according to the research, the patients did not have any side effects and the cancer still did not reappear, two years after the end of the treatment. However, the results of this study remain to be qualified. This drug is in fact already used and the sample is quite limited (the study concerns only eighteen patients, twelve of whom received this product). The results will therefore have to be replicated to be validated. In addition, this treatment is not arbitrary and can cause harmful effects on health. Already used in some hospitals in Belgium, the drug is not reimbursed in France following an unfavorable opinion from the High Health Authority. In particular, the absence of “robust” comparative data.
