Wolff: Schumacher is 'on the (...)

When Mick Schumacher signed for Ferrari and joined the Ferrari Driver Academy, Mercedes F1 made no secret of their interest in the young German. Toto Wolff, the team principal, does not exclude that they could have a common future if Schumacher were to leave the bosom of Haas and the Scuderia.

“Why not ?” launched Wolff. The manager of the eight-time world champion team did not hide his surprise to see that the criticisms against the pilot came directly from G√ľnther Steiner. According to him, it is “the wrong way” to proceed so that its pilot overcomes his difficulties.

“You have to take the pressure off him. Mick is smart and we know he can ride, so you have to let him ride as his instincts allow him to.” Wolff admits that he would surely take the risk of leaving his pilot “roll, with the possibility that he finds himself in the wall again. But he has to learn that. You have to trust him.”

Ralf Schumacher, Mick’s uncle, agrees with Wolff’s comments and denounces Steiner’s management: “He has an extremely authoritarian style of leadership which I remember from my days in Formula 1, but which is no longer appropriate today. I think Mick would already have points with a boss like Franz Tost or Andreas Seidl.”

Wolff wants to be reassuring for Schumacher and shows unexpected confidence in the German: “With or without the Schumacher name, Mick has a lot of strengths and that means he will always be on our radar.”
