The first round of the French legislative elections, which was held this Sunday, delivered all its promises of suspense. After having been announced neck and neck for a long time, it is finally the presidential coalition Together! which won by a short margin – 21,442 votes – ahead of the union of the left (Nupes), according to the results communicated by the Ministry of the Interior.
However, according to the Insoumis Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the Nupes is the big winner of this ballot. “The truth is that the presidential party is beaten and defeated“, he hammered Sunday evening during a speech.
This Monday, several rebellious leaders also denounced a “manipulation” of the results. According to Manuel Bompard, director of Mélenchon’s presidential campaign, a labeling problem would have biased the outcome of the vote. According to him, certain candidates invested by the union of the left (Nupes) would have been labeled “various left” despite their support for the union of Mélenchon, and the votes in their favor would thus not have been counted in the results of Nupes. This would be the case in particular for several candidates from Corsica and overseas, including Jean-Hugues Ratenon, outgoing deputy who came first in the 5th constituency of Reunion.
On Twitter, this Monday morning, Jean-Luc Mélenchon also took the example of Joël Aviragnet, candidate in the 8th district of Haute-Garonne, to denounce this manipulation. “Here is an example of a candidate not counted by Darmanin on the account of Nupes. Of course he will be elected. Of course he will sit in the PS group, member of the Nupes“, he commented.
According to the calculations of Manuel Bompard, himself a candidate in the 4th constituency of Marseille, the Nupes would thus count 6,101,968 votes (i.e. 26.8%) against the 5,836,202 votes (i.e. 25.7%) that the Ministry of l ‘Interior attributes to him.The Insoumis deplores a manipulation “to artificially make Macron’s party appear in the lead“.
A statement shared by other Insoumis, in particular by the deputy Clémentine Autain, who imposed herself hands down in her constituency of Seine-Saint-Denis. “Not having confidence in the figures of the Ministry of the Interior, I did not think one day it would come to this“, she castigated this Monday morning on France Inter.”We have a more than strong question which suggests that Mr. Darmanin wanted to highlight the macronie”, she continued, calling for the votes to be recounted.
These accusations of “manipulation” aroused strong reactions in the French political ranks, with the presidential coalition in mind. The general delegate of LREM, Stanislas Guérini, denounced a “smoking” on the part of the Insoumis.
“It is the Nupes campaign management which, by an email sent to the Ministry of the Interior on June 8, 2022, listed all the candidates to whom the Nupes shade should be attributed. In this list – however very comprehensive – no overseas candidates were listed. These candidates are also not listed on their official website“, reacted for its part the Ministry of the Interior, on France Info.
Note that the daily “Le Monde” itself carried out the exercise of relabeling each candidate, based on its own observations. According to the calculations of the French newspaper, the Nupes would be in the lead, with 5,931,906 votes or 26.1% of the votes cast, ahead of Ensemble!, with 5,867,165 of the votes, or 25.81%.
