Dries Mertens and Amadou Onana were not present during the quarter of an hour open to the press. Mertens had already skipped training on Monday due to a physical glitch, but returned to the squad the next day and was on the bench in Wednesday’s 6-1 win over Poland. Onana celebrated his national team debut against the Netherlands, but then it emerged that he suffered a leg injury.
Anderlecht defender Zeno Debast was the surprise guest at training on Friday in Tubize. Recently called up for the first time with the Belgian hopes, he had not played the last match against Scotland. Coach Roberto Martinez regularly allows the youngsters to train with the A team to gain experience, but the 18-year-old defender will not be able to travel to Wales.
Romelu Lukaku hasn’t trained either, but the centre-forward’s withdrawal from Wales had already been announced. Injured in the ankle, he was replaced after only 26 minutes against the Netherlands. He remains in the group for the time being with the hope of being fit for the last match, next Tuesday in Poland.
