Lhe Brussels Parliament is considering ritual slaughter on Friday. More specifically on the proposed order which aims to impose slaughter with prior stunning. MEPs must decide on Friday whether to confirm or invalidate this vote in committee. The Brussels PS calls on its parliamentarians to come out in favor of rejecting the text. MP Julien Uyttendaele (PS) is one of the few socialists who will not follow the group instructions. In a press release, the agent distances himself from the Brussels Federation of the PS.
“This file is extremely sensitive as it touches what is most intimate in the minds of many fellow citizens. I therefore attended all the hearings in this commission without prejudice. I have also consulted many Belgian and foreign reports and I have obviously, in my capacity as a lawyer, analyzed the case law in this area. The scientific consensus is indisputable: the absence of stunning increases animal suffering,” explains Julien Uyttendaele in particular.
Not just a performer
The Brussels deputy does not consider himself bound by the directives received by the Brussels Federation of the PS.
Between the lines, he explains that he does not see his mandate as a deputy as that of a button press. “I do not see the exercise of my mandate as that of a simple executor. The position taken by the federation is not based on the program that the activists voted for in 2019, nor on the government agreement that we voted for at the start of the legislature. This question has never been discussed in any congress or within the framework of the political bureau of the Brussels PS. However, we had time to discuss it within the bodies of our federation, ”he laments.
