Just a few months after unveiling its very first 200-megapixel photo sensor, the ISOCELL HP1, Samsung is doing it again and releasing a new, more efficient and above all more compact model, the ISOCELL HP3.

Samsung announces the ISOCELL HP3, an ultra-powerful 200-megapixel photo sensor

Ask all the manufacturers of smartphones, tablets or laptops what hinders them the most in their innovations, they will all answer you the same thing, the lack of space.

If we don’t all have smartphones that last 4 days without recharging or that offer speakers worthy of a home cinema, it’s above all because you have to find the space somewhere to be able to put everything what is needed, where it is needed…

We are very happy to have photo modules practically as good as certain dedicated devices from major brands, but all that is necessarily to the detriment of something else at one time or another. Manufacturers are therefore constantly looking for quality products that are as compact as possible, and it is with this in mind that Samsung announced, just yesterday, its new photo module intended for our future smartphones, the ISOCELL HP3.

Samsung is thinking big with this new 200MP miniature sensor

After having made the heyday of a large part of the industry with its famous 108 mpx sensor (Samsung, like others, supplied photo modules or even memory for many manufacturers), Samsung announced in September 2021 the release of its very first 200 megapixel (200 mpx) module, a sensor capable of taking photos in very high definition, but also of filming in 8K at 30 fps for example.

With the ISOCELL HP3, Samsung goes even further, not in the definition, we stay on 200 mpx, but in its pixel size, since it goes from 0.64 µm for the HP1 to only 0.56 µm for the HP3. A reduction of 12% which makes it quite simply the smallest on the market.

Thanks to that, the sensor is thus reduced by 20% and measures only 1/1.4 inch. A considerable asset in terms of saving space that absolutely all manufacturers of mobile devices are looking for.

In addition, this new sensor also comes with an autofocus solution called Super QPD, which allows all pixels of the sensor to be equipped with autofocus capability. On the video side, there is a capture in 8K at 30 fps or 4K at 120 fps.

Announced yesterday by the South Korean giant, the new ISOCELL HP3 photo sensor is not expected before early 2023, pile-up for the release of the future Galaxy S23/S23+/S23 Ultra, what a great coincidence.
