this is how Natalie Portman was convinced to return as Jane Foster

We are only a few weeks away from the release of Thor: Love and Thunder. As promotion for the new Marvel movie heats up, filmmaker Taika Waititi has spoken about how he was able to convince comedian Natalie Portman to return as Jane Foster. Indeed, the latter had abandoned the Marvel adventure after Thor: The Dark World.

Thor: Love and Thunder – Jane Foster will be at the center of the plot

On July 13, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will unveil its new film to the world: Thor: Love and Thunder. The feature film will mark Taika Waititi’s return to directing after his previous feat on Thor: Ragnarok. Indeed, with the third part of the saga Thor, Taika Waititi managed to modernize the character, to make it more human, funnier and above all much more endearing. In addition, Thor: Ragnarok brought in more than $853 million in box office receipts.

Inevitably, Marvel Studios entrusted him with the production of Thor: Love and Thunder. A fourth opus that goes inspired by Jason Aaron’s cult comics. An arc in which Thor loses his Asgardian powers and then becomes Odinson. Mjolnir is then ownerless, and is picked up by Jane Foster. The latter then becomes the new thunder goddess. The only problem is that she has terminal cancer. And each of his transformations into Thor weakens him a little more. It remains to be seen, however, whether Taika Waititi will take up the plot of cancer or not. In parallel, the terrible Gorr roams the universe to assassinate all the gods of creation.

The return of Natalie Portman

To adapt Jason Aaron’s comics, Taika Waititi needed to bring Natalie Portman back in the role of Jane Foster. However, the actress hung up on the Marvel Universe in 2013 after Thor: The Dark World. In particular because she considered her character to be too secondary and not impactful enough for the status of women. In a recent interview with Fandango, Taika Waititi explained how he managed to convince Natalie Portman to return to the MCU:

Her character in the early movies is probably not the most exciting version of the female character that we’ve come to expect from those movies… So I had to talk to her and explain to her that I wanted to change her character just like we changed the character of Thor for Ragnarok, to give him more freedom to be adventurous, fun and funny. Because Natalie is a really funny person! Unfortunately, that’s not always the main goal when they come up with characters in movies…

It must be said that Jane Foster has always lived in the shadow of the Asgardian warrior. Thor: Love and Thunder will allow him to take the hand and to be a central character of this new component, to see the continuation of the MCU. Taika Waititi also clarifies that this return in no way destabilizes the continuity of the MCU:

What really happened: did they break up? Who left whom? We had full creative freedom to do whatever we wanted along those lines! There is love in this movie on every level. Everyone has a little revival in one way or another – universal love and love for oneself, love for friends, love for the universe. You can assume a few things from the title, but don’t assume too much either! The image I had in mind looked like the cover of a good old fashioned station novel. I want it to feel like this. I approached things from an Officer and Gentleman angle, especially the end scene… I think I was very influenced by the big romances when making this film!

Thor: Love and Thunder is therefore expected July 13 in dark rooms.
